Old Graffiti on Thors Rock
'Professor' Taylor's Carving

The Thurstaston area of Wirral has its name derived from Viking occupation. There is vast expanse of National Trust open space, once known as Irby Heath on old maps, but today known as Thurstaston Common. Popular to visitors for years, has been the pursuit of climbing a large block of isolated sandstone, commonly known as 'Thors Rock'. This is roughly 50 feet in length, 30 feet wide and 25 feet high and has been worn down by years of weather and the many hands and feet that have eroded its surface in ascent to the top. Local legend has it that the rock got its name from Viking settlers who thought a lightning strike on the rock was like the God Thor striking the stone with a hammer. It is more likely the result of being unwanted stone by the quarry trade, deemed too soft for building work and thus left in place whilst harder examples were cut from the surrounding geology. Such is the softness of the surface, it has been the subject of many years of carved graffiti. One of the more interesting inscriptions reads as follows:

'Prof Taylor, Ventriloquist, FIJI, Mizpah, 1879, Eternity'

Who was 'Professor Taylor'? Was he local or was he from further afield? We'll probably never know, but it's certainly one of the more unusual pieces of old graffiti that has stood the tests of time and the elements!
